It's Not What You Do Some Of
The Time,
It's What You Do Most Of The Time That Counts
By
Mark Teal
This has to be one of the
most important phrases to keep in mind when it comes to fitness and
nutrition. Nobody sticks to a perfect fitness regimen or eats
exactly what they are supposed to eat all of the time. Some people
have a little more will power than others but everyone must take a break
once in a while.
That's why I think the
best nutrition plan includes a day or a meal a week when you eat
whatever you want. Believe it or not, it's healthy mentally and
physically, to pig out once in a while. Mentally, you quench that
desire to eat your favorite "bad" foods. Physically, you signal to
your body that it's not starving. It has plenty of food. So
keep churning the wheels and burning calories. Keep that
metabolism going!
Now, obviously you don't
want to go overboard. That's why I say, it's not what you do some
of the time, it's what you do most of the time that counts. If you
pigged out all of the time, you'd gain fat, start to feel bad, start to
look bad, and be on your way to some serious health issues.
So "eating bad" is ok once
in a while. The same holds true for exercise. So maybe you
were lazy for a week and didn't get to workout. Maybe you went on
vacation and did nothing. Does that mean you just stop working out
since you haven't been in a week? No! Remember, it's what
you do most of the time that counts. If you made sure you got
plenty of exercise each week for a year but missed a week or two, I'd
say that qualifies as doing the right thing for your body most of the
time.
Some Nutrition Day Off
Tips
Now I'd like to point out a few tips that might help on your "days off".
One of my friends explained that he would eat six meals a day everyday
except on his day off. He would purposely eat nothing all day so
that he could pig out in the evening. Now I guess that's Ok if he
is taking the entire day off his nutrition plan. But if he really
meant that he just wanted to take the evening meal off, he should have
eaten his normal six meals that day.
I know that means he would
have put away more calories that day but in the end it's a better
strategy. You see if he ate properly all day, he wouldn't be as
hungry in his "pig out" meal and would eat a little less of the "bad
foods". Also, by continuing to eat on his nutrition plan that day,
he kept his metabolism going. If he eats nothing during the day,
he slows his metabolism. Then boom, he nails his body with a bunch
of calories in his big meal. Not good. You want a fast
metabolism to help burn through those calories so they're not stored as
fat.
Some Training Tips
Now how about training on your nutrition plan day off. I recommend
resistance training on a day you will be eating more. Think about
it, feed the muscle, right? Your muscles are trying to recover
after your resistance training. Give them food.
Another friend of mine
likes to go out and have a few beers once in a while. On those
days, I recommend cardio training. Get that metabolism rolling
during the day with some heavy cardio so that your body can better
handle the calories in those beers later. I don't think I'd do
resistance training on a day that I might drink alcohol. My body
would be too busy processing the alcohol that night and would not "have
the time" to build the muscle that I tore down in my resistance training
that day.
Which brings up another
good point. You do realize that you are tearing down muscle when
you lift weights right? Yep, you are creating micro-trauma in the
muscle when you resistance train. How is that a good thing and why
is resistance training good for you then? Well your body rebuilds
that muscle when you give it time to rest. It not only rebuilds
it, but it builds it bigger, better, and stronger than it was before.
But you must give your muscles time to rest after lifting. That's
why it doesn't make sense to work the same muscle day after day.
It needs time to rest, recover, and build.
